Restoration of the Bell Tower of the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Grottella
In 2013 began the restoration and consolidation of the bell tower of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Grottella in Copertino (Lecce). The intervention has preserved a structure of the 60s, 26.59 meters high, improving stability and safety, given the absence of finishes and signs of deterioration.
Consolidation and structural reconfiguration
The bell tower, with an internal spiral staircase and a bell supported by four pillars, showed an advanced deterioration of reinforced concrete. The restoration has involved the removal of the aedicola summit, reducing the height to 23.16 meters, ensuring greater stability.
New space for the historic bell
To maintain functionality, a new space was created in continuity with the existing pillars to house the historic bell, ensuring stability and security without altering the original architecture.
Interior and exterior finishes: recovery and protection
The interior of the bell tower has been finished with plaster, improving aesthetics and protection. For the exterior, a plaster based on lime and sand has guaranteed resistance to atmospheric agents, maintaining the historic appearance thanks to the cleaning of the surfaces.
Historical recovery and cultural enhancement
The restoration of the Sanctuary’s bell tower is an example of respectful architectural recovery, which has preserved the historical and symbolic value of the structure. The intervention ensured stability and security, making the bell tower usable by the community.
